Visibility: The DOT number must be visible from a distance of 50 feet. Contrast: The number must be in a color that contrasts sharply with the background color of the vehicle. Legibility: The lettering should be bold, easy to read, and in a plain, understandable font. Placement: The DOT number must be displayed on both sides of the power unit, painted or permanently attached, and not lower than the bottom edge of the door. Generally, a USDOT number is required if your vehicle is used for interstate commerce and meets one or more of the following conditions: Weighs 10,001 pounds or more (gross vehicle weight rating or actual weight) Transports 9 or more passengers (including the driver) for compensation
